Wanted: Snowmaking Technician – part-time, seasonal
Prospect Mountain cross country ski area – Woodford, Vermont

Prospect Mountain is a non-profit cross country ski area offering skiing on over 30 kilometers of groomed and ungroomed trails as well snowshoeing in Woodford, Vermont.  In 2023, Prospect began a small snowmaking operation to cover the area and trails nearest to their base lodge.  The organization plans to make snow in the early and mid-season as needed to supplement natural snow.

Job Summary

The Snowmaking Technician works as part of a team of other Prospect employees and volunteers to produce man-made snow to meet the objectives of the organization.  The Snowmaking Technician reports to the General and/or Assistant General Manager.  Supervision by the Snowmaking Technician of volunteers assisting with snowmaking process is expected.  Most of the work is expected to occur between late November and mid to late January but later season work is possible depending on natural snowfall.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assist with all aspects of snowmaking:
    • System activation/charging of pipes.
    • Monitoring and adjusting snow gun settings based on snow quality.
    • Redirecting/moving snow guns.
    • Monitoring and adjusting system parameters.
    • System shutdown and draining of hoses and pipes.
  • Oversee volunteers assisting with snowmaking.
  • Other tasks related to snowmaking or cross country ski operations, as necessary.

Requirements

The Snowmaking Technician position is physically demanding and involves extended periods spent outdoors in winter conditions.  Lifting heavy items and considerable walking and standing are required.  The snowmaking system must be run according to a set protocol.  Following system protocol and daily objectives and instructions are critical.  Snowmaking entails working with high voltage power and high-pressure water and air.  Because snowmaking operations require specific weather conditions, a flexible schedule is necessary.  Night, weekend and holiday work is expected.  Experience with basic hand tools, general maintenance and the safe operation of a snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle are useful.

Compensation

$25/ per hour, based on experience.  A minimum 200 hours are guaranteed per snowmaking season (November-March)
